From a thread on another site, someone wanted to know how to do something like this, and I was curious as to whether I could do it myself. Plus, i needed a break from more serious work.

Yes, Fujiko-san. Basically, the lights are two rows of polygons on the sphere, given luminous properties and the output increased so that they appear white, while the colour they send out is still either red or blue. Lots of other little tweaks to the render for softness and such on the lights.
Very nice light effects!
