Description

Although I am not really happy with some elements of this image I thought that I would post it anyway. My biggest headaches were centered around the splash effects which I tried to do completely in Vue itself using Wabe's Splashes and some waterfalls from Luigi Marini (both from Cornucopia3D). In the end I had to add some water effects using Ron's Photoshop Brushes from Daz3D but I am still not happy with what I ended up with. I may try to re-do this again in the future. This image shows a Suchomimus tenerensis catching fish in an Early Cretaceous swamp about 112 million years ago. Because of the shape of it's skull, paleontologists have speculated that it may have been a fish eater. The Suchomimus model (Daz3D) was created by Dinoraul and modified slightly by me. The dragonflies, if you can find them, are by Noggin also at Daz3d. The Sarcosuchus and Latimeria are also Dinoraul models and are available here in the Renderosity MarketPlace. I modified the Latimeria somewhat so it that it looks more like a generic lobe finned fish.

It's not bad at all, the splashes are quite convincing most of them. And the Suchomimus is such a cool dinosaur. A tip on postworking watersplashes (Photoshop): While the Ron's splashes and Wabe's Vue ones look great here - difficult to tell which is which actually - the "fog" around the creature's mouth looks a little too diffuse IMHO. On a separate layer, try painting with the splash colour (white-ish) with the brush set to "dissolve" mode, this will produce a lot of small dots ("drops"), the density depending on the opacity of the brush. When done, apply a subtle Gaussian blur filter (I use a value of 0,2 - 0,5) to smoothen the appearance. You can also use a motion blur for some more action-like effect.

Great work! The lighting and composition on this are outstanding, as is the posing. Water effects are tricky A LOT of trial and error. What you've created here is totally convincing.

Thanks for the comments and thank you bigbraader for the tips. I have not done any post work before and still have lots to learn, so any suggestions are very helpful.

Hello Imx3d. The trees are from a bundle called 10 Terrific Trees (http://www.cornucopia3d.com/purchase.php?item_id=7776) although they only show up for me now when I do a search on 'Mangrove'. There is another set called 'Super Roots' that has some different trees as well as more mature mangrove trees. This can also be found by searching the store using Mangrove.

Wow. This is my first opportunity to view your work and it looks absolutely amazing to me! The level of detail is astonishing especially in all the vegetation. Outstanding lighting too. Very, very well done and a pleasure to view.
