Cool creation Woz!!....it has a kinda organic look to it.....were the colors achieved using the lighting?.....if so I reckon you could get some nice results from using a texture in the lighting itself....did I explain that okay?...I'm sure you know what I mean mate.

Yes Jeff.. I just pulled Dark blue = from below, aqua = from above the form is a mid grey with high specularity & high reflections. Ive played with some textures for the lights but TBH...nothing really jumped out at me. Mind you I was just using UV Pos.
Linear blend 'tween 2 marker locations. In case you dont know what that means its basically: O <-----volumetric------> O If each O is a sphere the <--> between them is the blend from one formto the Other...so we just change 1 shape to be differing & then let the blend do the rest of the work :)
