Description
Walking in the Wakodahatchee Wetlands, west of Delray Beach, Florida. Saw a female Anhinga sitting in a nest but didn’t notice any chicks. A few minutes later we had one of Floridas famous 3 minute thunder storms. Glancing back at the nest, Mother Anhinga was spreading her wings to protect her new chicks from the pouring rain. Zoom is a must here, to see one of the chicks, looking out from under Moms right wing. Anhingas are close relatives to Cormorants, except the Anhinga has a straight pointed bill and the Cormorant has a hooked bill. Anhingas are about 35 inches (89 cm) long and a wing span of 45 inches (114 cm).
