Description
Dedico questa foto a un’artista nata in questo giorno : Adrie
I dedicate this picture to an artist born on this day: Adrie
The picture tonight clarifies some of the questions asked last night by friends. The evening is a kestrel falcon, known for carratteristica to sit still in the fast moving air wings (on the form it takes is called the Holy Spirit with clear reference to the crucifix). Smaller in size than the Marsh Harrier which prefers instead to fly with wide turns, very high and is not ashamed to fly to the ground in the fields, always in search of food.
Gheppio - kestrel
Distinctive Characteristics
Length: 32-35 cm
Wingspan: 58-74 cm
Weight:
- Male: 160-215 grams
- Female: 190-310 grams
The body is slender, about as big as a pigeon, but less heavy, with predominantly reddish plumage (more pronounced in males), with dark longitudinal stripes on top and bottom, in the young is similar to the female, but more faded.
The beak is short and hooked, gray-brown with yellow wax.
The head is strong, grigiia blue (male), with short neck, slightly sunken eyes with a yellow rim around the eyes.
The wings are relatively narrow, long and pointed. The tail is long, rounded, gray in males, reddish in the female, with black terminal band.
The legs are yellow with dark nails, hooks.
Obvious sexual dimorphism (coloration and weight).
Biology
The breeding season is from April to June.
It builds its nest in large cavities of trees, cliffs or buildings, also uses old nests of crows. It lays 3-9 eggs with yellowish fawn spots. Incubation lasts 30 days (one brood per year). The offspring is nidicola and flies away in about 4 weeks.
Flight frequent beats interspersed with glides; makes the "holy spirit."
It feeds mainly on small mammals and large insects. Generally have solitary habits.
Emits a series of sharp lines. In the wild can live more than 16 years.
