Wiki:
"Which Side Are You On?" is a song written by Florence Reece in 1931. She was the wife of a union organizer for the United Mine Workers in Harlan County, Kentucky. In 1931 the miners of that region were locked in a bitter and violent struggle with the mine owners. In an attempt to intimidate the Reece family, deputies hired by the mining company illegally entered and searched the Reece family home. Sam Reece had been warned in advance and escaped, but Florence and their children were terrorized in his place. That night, after the men had gone, Florence wrote the lyrics to "Which Side Are You On?" on a calendar that hung in the kitchen of her home. She took the melody from a traditional Baptist hymn, "Lay the Lily Low", or the traditional ballad "Jack Munro". Florence recorded the song and it can be heard on the CD Coal Mining Women.
Reece supported a second wave of miner strikes circa 1973, as recounted in the documentary Harlan County USA. She and others perform "Which Side Are You On?" a number of times throughout.

I find this to be a great photojournistic work. Outstanding.
Striking capture, well done!
great photo!!
Outstanding capture! love the minimal color...Bust the unions and the Democratic party goes too. Dems and Independents need to really rise up and start busting heads...Chicago style!
Excellent documental photography my friend.....!!!
Love the Photo and the sign. TRUTH. But we don't need to bust heads (much as I'd like to) We simply need to STOP electing ANY Republican to ANY office EVER. Send them into OBLIVION where we sent the FASCISTS. They only do what we LET them do.
Excellent capture. I feel that any politician regardless of party that hold up a vote for an agenda rether than for concern of the people should be replaced.
Journalism is defined by respect for facts: who, what, where, and when. This work does not rise to that level of discernment – this work is something else entirely: this is a propaganda piece for the conflict oriented politics of the radical collectivist Left. The events in Wisconsin offer opportunity for individuals to judge the distinction between deceitful propagandizing of the liberal left and the truth, here America is seeing the greed of public labor unions and the lust for union power at the expense of working tax-payers laid bare. The fact is that the Wisconsin Education Association Council, the largest teachers union in the state, has grossly abused the collective bargaining privilege for decades, resulting in the unnecessary siphoning of millions of dollars from Wisconsin public schools. In the majority of districts around the state, WEAC negotiators have used their advantage to pressure local school boards into purchasing coverage from WEA Trust, an insurance company established by and closely associated with the union. WEA Trust offers very comprehensive health coverage, at a very high cost to schools. Most of the districts with the most expensive health premiums in the state are clients of WEA Trust. Most of the districts with the lowest premiums do business with other insurance carriers. A few dozen districts have managed to dump WEA Trust insurance over the past few years, despite the protests of teachers and their union. Officials from many of those districts say they managed to save at least six figures their first year with a different carrier, and maintained steady rates in subsequent years, while still offering quality health coverage to employees. In an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal, Professor Robert Costrell exposes the taxpayer rip-off perpetrated by the Wisconsin teachers unions. “The showdown in Wisconsin over fringe benefits for public employees boils down to one number: 74.2. That's how many cents the public pays Milwaukee public-school teachers and other employees for retirement and health benefits for every dollar they receive in salary. The corresponding rate for employees of private firms is 24.3 cents.” Americans do not understand what "labor unions" mean. Nothing prevents a group of workers at a plant or office from getting together, signing an agreement which delegates power to negotiate contracts to certain representatives, and then proceeding with collective bargaining by those workers who chose to sign the agreement. That is not unionism; it is simply a business arrangement, much like when an athlete has an agent or a client has a lawyer. The problem with unionism is that those who do not feel such an agreement is needed are compelled to surrender their right to bargain for their working conditions and compelled, as well, to support a vast, expensive bureaucracy of labor satraps. It is coercion of workers masked as industrial democracy. Coerced unions were always unnecessary, wasteful, and immoral -- and all unions today are coerced unions. Not only is there no right to collective bargaining in public employment, it is wrong. Collective bargaining distorts and corrupts democratic government. Collective bargaining is a process for employer-employee relations that was designed for the private sector. This process served as the model for the development of public-sector collective bargaining without taking into account the fundamental differences between the two sectors. Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour explains: “When they have collective bargaining in Wisconsin, on one side of the table there’s state employee unions or the local employee unions. On the other side of the table are the politicians that (the unions) paid for in the election of those politicians,” Barbour said. “Now, who represents the taxpayers in that negotiation? Well, actually, nobody.” What we observe is the impact of the self-serving interests of the public sector unions and their paid-for toadies in the Democratic Party. Liberal Democrats and public union leaders are dredging up a history that is long past: old images of sweat shops and brutal treatment of humans by big business. Wisconsin public sector union members (like many leftist ideologues) hope these emotional images --used without any basis in reality -- will sway their audiences. It is disingenuous (read: intentionally misleading, calculating and deceitful) that they liken themselves to the people of Egypt and Libya -- who, of course, have been struggling to free themselves from oppressive dictators – and not attempting to preserve a corrupt and wrongful wage and benefit bargaining advantage. Contrast these images with the truth: public sector union members, unlike the people of Egypt and Libya, have some of the largest salaries, benefits, and pension packages in the country -- courtesy of American taxpayers. Nothing rains on the parade of the radical collectivists like prosperity –that is why we are seeing it under attack by those who desire to formant outrage, dissatisfaction, envy, and hatred. These “community organizers” would have you believe that the world has not moved on since 1931: Don’t believe your lying eyes: your modern life-style including twenty-four hour a day electricity, heated climate controlled homes, a vast array of transportation choices, well stocked grocery stores and the ability to make convenience purchases at any hour of the day or night, your home PC (brought to you by Apple, Microsoft, IBM, Dell, and others) your ipod, cell-phone, twitter, HD plasma screen television, instant global communications and information access, along with the hundreds of millions who live productive lives due to advanced medical technology – all this is clearly the result of a vast evil corporate conspiracy to give people exactly what they want and desire. The wealth produced in a society (by the productive labor and trade between its members) sets the lower limit of both the standard and quality of life. You cannot elevate the masses by tearing down the producers, Limiting success does not create equality; it spreads poverty to all. Far from creating poverty, capitalism, in the form of industrial production, at the dawn of the industrial era, gave the poor the first chance they ever had to survive, in pre-industrial times the rule being disease, starvation, and death. America was founded on the notion that a man can create a life for himself with his wits and hard labor. The left see the world not in terms of private individuals who have accomplished great things – they see the prosperity and wealth, and distort reality in their own minds, somehow they believe wealth is limited, a finite sum spread among the few – this is a distortion, bluntly it is a lie. The left do not view American history as a series of accomplishments – they view it as robbery, which it is not, and in their tiny vision-limited world view, fueled by self-limited knowledge and imaginations, they dream only in terms of how that wealth can be stripped from those who brought it into being, what they lust for is Authoritarian Collectivism. The radical Left is defined here as any Authoritarian Collectivism in which individual freedom is subsumed by the dictates of a dominant central government: these are known as Communism, or Revolutionary Socialism -- its Fascist, Third Way, or Progressive pseudonym. “In Political Extremism, Left and Right,” Bruce A. Riggs says “Today in the United States this Collectivist ideology travels under the sanitized, if disingenuous, banner of "social justice.” “It is a fatally flawed ideology built on the Left's implicit denial of human nature: man's "out-of-the-herd" evolutionary progress toward individual achievement and self-actualization. “To suppress human nature and human difference is, in essence, the Left's utopian ambition -- an ambition that requires the totalitarian state. “It requires a totalitarian state because it is a delusional quest to return man to an egalitarian herd from which he evolved thousands of years ago. And as the history of the twentieth century shows, humanity rebels against such coerced devolution. Marx's elimination of private property coincidentally strips incentives to produce. The result is social decay to a dismal level of perpetual shortages and shared poverty -- just ask the citizens who stood in the endless bread lines of the former USSR. “The radical Left's denial of human nature carries with it the arrogant assumption that humans are little more than replicated androids content to do whatever government mandates. This is simply elitist wishful thinking which projects sheep-like docility on independent beings which are more feline than bovine in nature -- and you can't herd cats. “The revolutionary socialists' road to its egalitarian fantasy world is less about achieving an altruistic "social justice" than it is about pursuing a self-serving, compulsive quest for personal redemption: The revolutionists denied human nature at work. It is a zealotry which, history shows, has led to the perverse belief that wholesale executions, killing fields, mass starvations, and forced-labor gulags are perfectly legitimate, even necessary, means of creating the perfect socialist world. These slaughters were done solely to extinguish the educated, innovative, entrepreneurial, productive "bourgeoisie" -- the "greedy" middle class whose existence was/is intolerable to the priesthood of this ostensibly egalitarian, if murderous, Collectivist ethos. As I said above, the days of the radical left are numbered – American’s prefer their prosperity. The dismal turn-out for failed nation-wide solidarity protests spell doom for the “hate the rich, hate prosperity” meme. Look at the decreasing numbers of respondents and views of these pro-union posts and the message becomes clear: and the radical left knows it –they see the hammer of history coming for them and they grow desperate. We shall not morn their passing.
Congradulations Costa, you managed to bring Mr. Black out of his cubbyhole! What he can't explain is why so many Republicans have expressed their outrage at this run against democracy in Wisconsin. He also can't explain why Governor Walker is currently running a disapproval rating of somewhere near 60% or why citizens all over the country are finally wakeing up. He can't explain why Walker gave a 1.4 billion dollar tax give away to corporations and then declared an emergency due to the deficit he created. He also can't explain why someone with his views continues to accept disability payments from a socialist program like Social Security. This is a great piece of photojournalism. Of course in my day we would have had a bigger crowd. {;->
