Description
This shows Ernst Stuhlinger's ion powered 'Umbrella Ships' leaving Earth for Mars. This was a serious design - the ion engine is halfway down the handle, there's a nuclear reactor at the base of the handle, (safely away from the crew quarters centre and top), and the umbrella structure is a cooling system to shed all the waste heat.
Note also the yellow 'double headed' rocket, intended to descend to the surface of Mars, and fly back up again.

Fascinating! It begs to have a story behind it.
Nice modeling work, I remember reading about that concept. Wonderful render!
Thanks to all for the great feedback - just to emphasize, this was a 100% serious design for a manned mission to Mars.
Love it. Be nice if you do an image to show the rockets departing for the martian surface.
Superb.
