Description
We've been getting a fair amount of snow here in Southeastern Michigan. Nothing like the "StormaZilla" that hit Chicago mind you, but still, earlier in the week I shoveled snow that was halfway to my knees, and then today I shoveled snow that was ankle-deep twice! My snow banks are now taller than I am, which is kind of cool! I know, I'm weird, but I actually LIKE snow. Tomorrow I go sledding! Anyway, the house I'm living in is, like so many old houses, very poorly insulated, so the roof is creating some very impressive icicles, which alas are too high up for me to get a dramatic shot like this easily of the really big ones. But, when I was trying for some night-shots I notice this odd icicle, so I just had to try to capture it. The way water can flow and freeze, sublimate from solid directly to gas without first melting, it's such a bizarre and fascinating material. I'll never tire of the myriad bizarre things it can make both with itself, or in the places it resides.

Like crystal..an amazing capture! Thanks for sharing :)
Great shot! Looks almost snake like. I'm fond of snow too, but here in the Stormzilla land of Chicago, we've an embarrassment of riches. Perhaps I could send some your way. There's a bull-dozer and dump truck clearing out the alley behind my apartment building even as I type this, perhaps I should flag them down? Again, great shot!
That is so bizarrly cool - it's like some wierd crystal Dune-esq worm or something. That's just a really cool photo, Mike! I don't have any neat icecicles, just the normal ones, and they're mostly clinging to the wall. All I get when I shoot those is wierd, gray distortions... Nice one!
Oh that is so fkin awesome!!!
cool storyline, excellent illustration for that !
Fntastic shot, very well put together.....the length gives it the impact I think, wouldnt lokk as good as a short shot. You must have froze taking this.....thats passion for photography :)Mag :) ps...Nothing wrong with loving snow....natures icing on the cake :)
Strange, and beautiful, thanks!
Very interesting photo of this bifurcated icicle. I have a photo of a 5 meter (15 feet) long set, not vertical, but leaning due to the wind at the corner of the building. I'll see if I can post it one of these days. Keep up the good work! :-)
Looks like the icicle from hell, or something... :o) Great photograph.
Great image! It's never occurred to me to try and capture icicles at night, but now....
this is wonderful
Cool presentation
It's so smooth, usually when icicles have that sort of smooth, double prong thing going, there's a bit of rippling too...or maybe that's just a Chicago thing. I love ice shots like this and this is a real beauty. Great clarity and the dark background is super! I love that water can shape itself with just a little bit of help from temperature, gravity, and in some cases, wind! This proves just what a marvel water actually is! Weird stuff...and gorgeous!
joli glaçon
Extraordinary Capture!.... I feel your pain as far as the snow woes go...(smile)..It came through here(South Eastern Wisconsin)as well...I'm running out of room to put it...lol..
Your narrative is as interesting as the shot~ =D Stay warm!
FASCINATING!!! David
