Description
Another b&w illustration for the upcoming GALAXY PRIME Role Playing Game. The ships were rendered in Strata 3D and then combined in Photoshop over two public domain NASA photos.
The ships were created by using two renders: a toon render and a standard gradient render (both over a white background). I had to put a few spot lights between the ships to control the shadows, but other than that, I didn't have to do much to the ships except place them in the scene. I then combined the renders using some blending layer options in Photoshop (I also had to knock out the toon render of the front window on the lead ship, as it picked up the polygon lines). I then went through and strengthened some of the outlines to help define the shapes on the ships.
The ship models, by the way, came from the Strata Website, and are used by permission.
The background images were two NASA photos/illustrations that I combined and manipulated with layers and by moving the planet in the background. I then applied the Ocean Ripple filter to give it a bit of a rough-and-tumble look.
All in all, I'm pretty happy with the results.

By the way, the image was originally rendered in color, but I'm showing it in b&w because that's how it will be printed in the book.
