When the boot was on the other foot...
The Luftwaffe's experience with Britain 1.0 quickly proved the shortcomings of the whole Blitzkrieg thing when it came to beaches. Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet the Allies eventually enjoyed relative air superiority over occupied NEW Britain, at the business end of Japan's new empire. The formidable Japanese base there, at Rabaul, was once pivotal to Allied setbacks in the Solomon Islands campaign. So something had to be done about it. Right? Japan's war planners certainly hoped so. They had laboured long over Rabaul's mighty defences- for they intended to stay there. Well, guess what? The Allied counterattack "island-hopped" into New Guinea and the Pacific Islands instead. Once Rabaul lost control of the surrounding sea and sky, it's army found it was going nowhere. Ooops! Of course, the day to day reality of neutralising Rabaul's ports and airfields still required significant risk and lots of ordnance. Which is why I thought "The Battle of New Britain" would be a fitting outing for a simple Liberator model I just prepared in Shade.
What they probably need now is a few P38s to escort them home!

Cool bit of history, excellent image, love the Liberator, a real dump truck of a bomber.I agree they will probably feel a lot better with a few P-38s riding shotgun.
