Description
The okapi is a giraffid artiodactyl mammal native to the Ituri Rainforest, located in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Central Africa. Although the okapi bears striped markings reminiscent of the zebra, it is most closely related to the giraffe. Okapis are 6.2 to 8.2 feet (1.9 to 2.5 meters) long and stand 4.9 to 6.6 feet (1.5 to 2.0 meters) high at the shoulder. Their weight ranges from 440 to 660 pounds (200 to 300 kilograms). Well done - you captured this guy well. Okapis were Mrs Sea Dog's favorites and we always had to swing by their enclosures when we visited the SD Zoo or Wild Animal Park.

What a wonderful image of this rather bizarre animal Dana! I love it! We have a couple at our local zoo but they were very shy the last time I went and I couldn't get a decent shot. I cannot decide if they are gorgeous or hideous though... LOL... Thank you for sharing this!!!

WONDERFUL CAPTURE
Superbly stellar clarity and contrast in this pic of the okapi, Dana. I can see the giraffe influence in its shape and striping. And, the Konica Minolta DiMage took wonderfully sharp fotos, consider its low megapixel capabilities.
Oh what a beauty! That sloped back, that neck, that head...definitely related to the giraffe--one of my favorite big animals! What a shot! I love the way it looks as if this critter is wearing striped tights! Marvelous!
