Description
This is a caterpillar or larvae of the Luna Moth. After eating enough it will enter the Pupa stage where it will encase itself in a cocoon or chrysalis. When the Luna Moth emerges it will be a pale green moth with a wingspan of 3 to 4.3 inches (7.5 – 10.8cm). It will be longer than the wingspan because the hind wings will sweep into a tail. The cocoon is currently moving so as soon as it emerges there will be a quick photo and a ceremonial release. This moth will have 10 to 14 days to find a mate, lay eggs and then die. The Luna moth does not have a mouth so that is why it has a short lifespan. This will be the end of this summer’s great butterfly/moth educational summer project. Wonderful capture and biology lesson! Well done!
WOW, he blends in well!!!!
He's quite fat already, he should stop eating. Lol. Wonderful macro.
Fantastic capture! They look so cool in moth form. :)
Gorgeous shot dear Dana, loved the colors!
exceptional macro.
Good closeup POV and focus in this pic of the caterpillar nibbling away, preparing for its next life stage, Dana. Both being the same color, the luna moth capterpillar is hard to distinguish between itself and the leaves it feeds upon, performing all this without a mouth yet. Osmosis, possibly?
belle macro!!
Very beautiful capture , Dana ! In past days I photographed some caterpillars too.
