The Phantom to me is not so much something you fly as something you project out, with it's missiles, to defeat an enemy remotely. It's domain is space. The Hornet, though as yet unnamed, was a projection in time against an enemy that might never coalesce. Sitting in a comfortable airliner seat, flying was real. Above the clouds there were no bumps or lurches.
