Description
Apologies for the large size, but making it any smaller just doesn't do justice. Anyway, it rained a great deal last night and the yard is simply too wet to mow, so naturally I responded by getting myself all wet kneeling on the ground making a new arrangement. It has been interesting now that I live in town, people walk by or drive by as I'm doing these, and it's fascinating to see their reactions. Many seem to just ignore me, but every once in a while somebody just has to pause and watch. I keep expecting someone to ask "why" but nobody does.
As usual, no glue or strings or photoshop tricks, just balance and gravity.
The rocks themselves have been collected from various farm fields in my general area. I always ask permission before collecting, and while they look at me kind of funny at first, once I show them pictures most people become quite intrigued. There's even one farmer who has specially set aside a couple of rocks specifically for my little hobby (The big two in the center, they're my favorites because of the wonderful shapes and textures) because he knew I'd like them.
Have a great weekend everyone, and thanks for taking a look. Oh, if any of you try your hand, post some pictures, I love seeing what other people do when they try this out.

Nice! There's someone in my neighborhood that does this stuff, but I've never seen him (or her), just rocks in the yard.
Original always, and very interesting !
You are an ace for this work Michael! Very unique and interesting as always :)
VERY NICE :) YOUR THE MAN
Nine years ago we've visited San Francisco, and on the waterfront was a man building these rockpiles in the water. Great to see how gravity and elegance come together in this art. Excellently done! RS
Dude, These are ALWAYS incredible!!! David
This is just too cool, Michael! Keep going, and you'll have your own Stonehenge before long! I am bound and determined to try this - my rocks are all limestone and some 'junk' bits and pieces, not nice river rocks like yours, but I'll see what I can come up with! This is great!
Wild! (and I'm not talking about the lawn...)
I've been looking at your rock stacking for a long time, but never quite knew what to say about it. It's always fascinating, and I've told several people about your gallery. (You never know who's looking!) But THIS! Oh man. This is so above and beyond. Wow. This has an elegance that jumps off the screen. It's like jewelry, or fine sculpture. Don't ask me what the difference is ... but you've got my undivided attention here! Wonderful composition with the rocks, and your photographic pov is perfect.
trying to rebild stonehange lol cool shot
Stonehenge was my first thought:-) and then Garden of the Gods. Its simply marvelous what you do with the rocks. Maybe I will give it a try this summer, would be a great treat to have something so naturally beautiful! Wonderful work and shot!
Original family. Superb!.
COOL!
These seem alive! I know at least conceptually that they're rocks, but the feeling I get when I see them, especially in this arrangement, is that they're living beings...kids listening to a teacher; members of the tribe listening to a storyteller...or any number of things like that. The feeling this evokes is quite profound and I love this for that! It's brilliant work.
I may just try this, right after I have a couple glasses of wine!! You have a unique talent here... Have a nice weekend.
Anmazing stone art. WOW ! I am impressed.
