Description
First, let me thank each of you who put a birthday image up for me, also all who commented on them and all who emailed me. I was greatly surprised and it made for a wonderful birthday. Here at the house, the maintenance man and his brother made me a cake, all very much a surprise (and I didn't have to work!!! but I did bake two other cakes for birthdays that followed mine)
The Bee...Cicada Killer Wasp
This guy landed on my friends can of beer day before yesterday, the guy swatted at him with his hat and stunned him so I was able to get the shots without getting stung. He was on the front porch carpet and I got down on my knees with camera on macro right in his face, the markings are so beautiful, reminded me of a mask or painted face of a native. He is about 1 1/2" long. You can tell he was moving very slowly in this so I kept backing up, lol! Anyway he flew away shortly after I got the shots so I guess he is one tough dude!

Bee Totem
Bees are the symbol of fertility and sexuality. Its honeycomb, a hexagon, is the symbol of the heart and
represents the sweetness of life found within our own heart. It is also the symbol of the sun and all its energies.
The bee reminds us to extract the honey of life and to make our lives fertile (productive) while the sun shines. No matter how great the dream is, there is the promise of fulfillment if we pursue our dreams.
If a Bee has shown up in your life, examine your own productivity. Are you doing all you can to make your life more fertile? Are you busy enough? Are you making time to savor the honey of life and not becoming a workaholic?
The Bee is the symbol of accomplishing the impossible. Aerodynamically, its body is too large for its wings and should not be able to fly. Although now we understand how it does fly (high rate of wing movement), the Bee remains a symbol of accomplishing anything you put your mind to. In Hinduism, the Bee relates to Vishnu, Krishna or Kama, the God of Love. In Egypt, the Bee symbolized royalty. In Greece, it was the symbol of the Eleusinian Mysteries. The Celts associated the Bee with hidden wisdom.

Healthwise, all is healing well and I look forward to this being the time of great change for me, leaving all the rough patches as only distant memories. I still have a ways to go but I am feeling stronger and I can feel 'change' for the better on its way. What a beautiful closeup! I've never seen a Cicada Killer Wasp, but I've seen plenty of Cicadas, so I'm sure that the wasps weren't so far away. I'm quite familiar with yellowjackets, and their fondness for peach tea (and yes, they'll drink beer if given the chance) but I've never been able to capture a yellowjacket with such detail. I've gotten pretty close, but not this close, as yellowjackets make poor models as they're constantly distracted and moving off in a direction that isn't right for one's macro setting. Oh well. At least I can see this beauty, and marvel at all of those little insect hairs you captured. I love wasp faces too; they always remind me of creatures with beaks, even though wasps don't have beaks (they do have feather-duster tongues though, and I'm STILL hoping to capture such a sight: looks like I'll need more peach tea as bait and a quicker shutter finger. This is marvelous work, and incredibly interesting as well...but then I love insects, especially the stinging kind: they're so much fun to watch, even if they do steal your beer!

The wings and antenna do not look real in this excellent macro of a creature that looks like it's made of felt. I thought it was a toy at first. Glad you're feeling better and getting stronger.
