This is one of the 7 new species I have seen and captured this year and when I posted it at (BugGuide.com) hoping for an ID, I was informed that this was a new entry for their site. So I was doubly thrilled, lol. This Dragonfly is about 2" long with a slender abdomen. The eyes are separated (which is not very common in Dragonfly species). They prefer to perch on the ground or on very low vegetation. I have noticed that they also have a rather unusual flight characteristic in that they bounce up and down several feet as they travel through the air and they don't fly far before landing again. They also seem to prefer larger prey than most Dragonflies I have seen. The males have a distinctive arrangement of grasping appendages at the tip of the tail. This one seems to have captured a cranefly. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee FYI: I posted an image of a Dragonfly on Apr 18 that I miss-identified as a male Oklahoma Clubtail and included most of the above comments with it. I have since learned that image was a male Ashy Clubtail. I apologize for the error. I have since corrected that image.
