Description
Heron Island - I discovered the island on 3-8-10 - I went down to the Mississippi River ( about ½ mile from my house ) looking for something of interest to photograph - I took the photo you see on the bottom that day - you can see the island on the right - The river runs around it on both sides - I notice all the nests at the top of the trees - they were empty at the time and I had no idea why they were there - Today I road my bicycle down there with my son - To my surprise the tree tops were full of life - It is a Heron nesting grounds - I found out talking to some other observers this is an annual event - I plan to return tomorrow for more photos and info I hope - As you can see there is a fair amount of distance between the shore line on the left bottom photo and island on the right - It is a real challenge at full zoom ( 10X ) in my case to catch one of these guys in flight !! - The Heron in the middle has a stick in his beak - they spend a lot of there time with this activity - repairing and build up their nest - I have high hopes for great photo ops tomorrow - Till next time - thank you for viewing and your comments so much - As always enjoy & Take Care -

These really are wonderful captures in zoom and how amazing they look, and there are so many nests too. I love that middle capture as you have caught him at exactly the right angle.

superb work the manupulation makes it really cool!
What a lot of nests and birds! I love the second picture! The bare branches form such a beautiful setting for the heron! Great information, which along with the bottom picture lets me imagine the place very well. Excellent images and great find!
