Description
Sandy you asked me in your comment to my photo of Whites Mill if I was going to show a photo of the Wolves, so this one is for you.
This is one of the statues that I had mentioned in a previous post they are a group of 27 statues placed around the town of Abingdon, Virginia. The colorful statues were each painted by a local artist and had decorated the town until October, when they were auctioned off to benefit Advance Abingdon, the town's Main Street organization.
Sporting flags, eagles, butterflies, tuxedos and even polka dots, each statue had a theme and a name, from Hollywolf Incognito to Earth, Wind and Flowers.
The wolf sponsors paid $300 to $500, depending on the size of the statue, and artists put hours of work into each one. Wolves were chosen for the project because the Abingdon area was once called Wolf Hills.
According to local lore, legendary frontiersman Daniel Boone camped at the base of what is now Courthouse Hill while traveling through the area in 1760 during the night Boone's dogs came under attack by the wolves emerging from a cave at the hills crest prompting Boone to give Abingdon its first name - Wolf Hills.
If you would like to see the other wolves in the collection click the link below.
By the way I was using my laptop to edit this photo in Photoshop I normally use my desktop and the screen is a bit smaller on this so I hope it looks okay. Thanks again everyone, and have a good night. Off to watch American Idol lol.... nite nite.

Wonderful capture.
now that is a clever idea, nice photo and thanks for sharing it.
Nice shot and idea!!!
The colors are fine on my screen although I don't know if I would feel comfortable around a smiling wolf. Cool shot.

Such an interesting project.. my son sent me pics of pics in a similar one, but I forget where he took them!
Pic looks good to me, great link, the wolves are amazing, love the pack of wolves one & the one you have uploaded!!!!
How can one be scared of a smiling wolf? LOL! Great capture, Lynell!
very cool idea.
Very nice painting! Great capture.
Good lighting in this splendid shot of the wolf sculpture, but this guy must have been closely shaved by a dog barber, because the wolves I've seen in photos and movies are big hairy brutes. Then again, maybe they've got all that hair because they are from the cold northern climes. Incidentally, now that I think of it, the term, "Who's afraid of Virginia Wolf," must be a spinoff from the legendary "Who's afraid of the big bad wolf," of Three Little Pigs fame. And, although tempted, I've never watched "American Idol." I much prefer to watch good stuff such as "Fringe" and "24", both on the same Fox channel as AI.
very unique idea and superb shot
Wonderful capture. We have had a few cities here doing a similar thing with pigs and cows and a few other animals.
Excellent photo....
Very cool capture, interesting info and unique statue ~ thank you so much for sharing this!!!
To say the least, this wolf looks like, as if he has a smile on his face, probably can see his lunch just around the corner... Interesting capture with all the paintings on him. Cheers BB
Better a wolf than a werewolf! lol q-: Excellent shot! (:
Very cool wolf ... hope he's never shipped off to the car wash ... the artwork is impressive but may be water soluble. Nice shot.
Wow, I would love to own one of those! Gorgeous capture Lynell, I love the unique creativity of those artists!
