To every thing there is a season
And a time to every purpose under heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die
A time to plant, and a time to reap
A time to kill, and a time to heal

A time to weep, and a time to laugh
A time to mourn, and a time to dance
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together
A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing

Whatever comes in 2010, I hope you will approach it with commitment, vigor and clarity. You never know what's around the corner. Changes happen all the time, both large and small, and it's good to stay on your toes and pay attention.

Beautifully done on both counts, photo and words!! It's been a long time since I've read out of the bible, and apparently something I should be doing again, for I had forgotten how inspiring it is. I realize that this was dedicated to others, but see that it has touched so many more on their own personal level, my self included. I thank you for that, and hope this finds you well. I don't know who the second person is, but it doesn't matter as everyone here is connecting to the words & image. It's another of your flowers & irises in particular, and it has a real yin yang, upper & lower universe feel to it. It's really striking how it does that. In addition, it has powerful furls in the upper half, where we see the inner sanctum hedged about by all those wonderful veils. As for the connection to Ecclesiastes, it could be because the flower is transient and calls us to embrace its beauty here & now. It could be that flowers are seasonal, and yet in the right season they fill the world with an eternal beauty. It could be that your flower is filled with light & dark, like the opposites in Ecclesiastes. Or it could be because of the great sensuousness of this flower is at the heart of Eccl's message--ie, that even sensuousness has its time (though by embracing its beauty we hook ourselves into eternity). Well I don't know, but your text really makes us think. A beautiful capture, and loving for Marilyn in light of her great loss; and right for all of us as we enter the new year. Darkness to light--what the flower captures. A very thoughtful upload and your own loving words to us all. (And btw, in case you didn't study this in childhood: Ecclesiastes is the Greek translation of Qoheleth, the Hebrew for "gathering" or "gathering place". It probably referred to a place of sermons. [We get "ecclesiastical" from it, which originally didn't have religious connotations.] It was always ironic that a book entitled "gathering" had such radical vision for its time! Many rabbis & early christians tried to find orthodox interpretations in the work. It may well have been a simple heartfelt writer who looked at life with simple wisdom, and whose words were beautiful enough to be included in the canon. The book, of course, claims to be written by Solomon, which assured its place in the canon: But no one knows for sure that that wasn't appended to give it authority. Fact is, it's a simple vision outside of established religion, which speaks eloquently and directly, and stands on its own feet for its beauty and real common sense...)
This is gorgeous! The image and sentiments are just incredibly touching, especially since it seems that the start of 2010 is fraught with flux. For everything there is, indeed a season, and to quote Duke Leto Atreides: Without change, something sleeps within us...the sleeper must awaken. I always think of that when faced with change, both positive and negative, and this brings the point home. Beautiful, uplifting work.
