Description

The official title of this sculpture is Cloud Gate although everyone calls it The Bean. This is part of Millenium Park in Chicago. I should have told you all this yesterday, but I didn't think of it: The scuplture is 33 feet high, with the arch underneath topping out at 12 feet. It's 45 feet wide and 66 feet long. You can learn all about it here if you're interested. I was there with Marilyn and Mark, who you can see in this image. Marilyn has her camera lens right up against the surface of the sculpture, and Mark is behind her (white pants, maroon sweater). I'm in the shot too, of course, but due to the curved surface, I'm WAYyyyyyyy back there, probably farther away than you might think.

since you have a second sense for reflection & the overlap of the many worlds that reflection allows, I guess it was wholly natural that you'd take to this huge bean in chicago. This is one of the best shots I've seen of the thing, wholly tara in your utter respect for the reflective surface and in your sense of crop and angle. The angle, and against that bleached white sky, makes it an apparition, almost thought itself. It just hovers there like light. A wonderful shot; and other than the fact that I'm there (without written permission, btw--we'll talk! my lawyers are working as we speak) looking like I just stepped out of Frankenstein's laboratory (the hair's truly frightening, you gotta admit), it's a total joy! I don't see you, but that doesn't matter: You ARE the shot. It's your vision through & through. Brilliant.
