Description
Another illustration undertaken for one of the stories in Jay Piscopo's 2nd annual "Commander X Adventures." The story called for The Commander in a Santa Suit with Rocket Pack (Kurkurows). Difficult to imagine how expensive and comparatively difficult full colour printing was in the middle of the last century. This kind of double page duo tone spread was a feast for the eyes after pages of monochrome. My vote for priceless is the white beard and the black pencil moustache - how could they be so easily fooled!

I love the 2-color effect. This is very eye-catching a true to the period. The apes and skyline are particularly effective -- you get a sense of menace from their expressions and of height from the simple pattern of buildings and ground. I'm not in love with the Commander's pose, though. His arm seems to clash with the pistol's placement, and I would have liked to see a little more of his face. Also, his left hand is a bit lost at that angle. Of course, you know I'm just nitpicking (as usual). This is a great image done in your typically great style. By the way, it was nice to see you doing some baggy clothes on ole Saint Nick -- the wrinkles really did a nice job of conveying motion as he flies through the air. Well done!
