Description

I've been tinkering with my evolving "Empire" model in Shade - using boolean modelling to re-profile the keel and cut the windows etc into the mesh (rather than use transparency maps as previously). Thanks for viewing... Notes: July 1st 1936. In a world where the last biplanes were still clinging complacently to their spot in the aviation sun, the "Empire" boats seemed to emerge like Aphrodite from her shell, all sleek, bright and duralumin-blonde. Ok, I've been listening to too many Movietone newsreels. ;-) Built to distribute mail wherever "Britannia rules the waves" (between monsoons at least), the Short C-class also carried passengers, ...very wealthy passengers. These were the days when "low-cost air travel" meant leaving the Butler at home. It is a mark of the "can do" bravado of the age that construction of the Short C-class began apace before the "prototype" (eventually called Canopus) had even been launched. While Short Bros filled the Mail contract as a priority, and here I'll continue the shameless Classical allusions, the gathering clouds of war also saw the company turn out a fully-formed "Athena" - what the world and the steadily decreasing ranks of U-boat crews would know as the Short Sunderland, or "flying porcupine." If you are interested, some useful Short C-class reference material...
