Interior of the Basilica of Saint Mary Magdalen in Vezelay (France)
Yesterday MrsLubner was wondering about the acustics fo this place. Well, at the end of our visit just before leaving we observe the entrance of a group of monks and nuns all in white with long robes in a medieval style. They were distributed around the altar; eight monks at the left and eight nuns at the right.In a moment they began to sing the Vespers. We remained paralyzed instantly transported to the past. The voices in a magistral manner extended by all the nave; sometimes in a gregorian way but mostly with celtic reminiscences. We stand for 45 minutes in an awe. It was a marvelous experience.

Vespers is the evening prayer service in the Western Catholic, Eastern (Byzantine) Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran liturgies of the canonical hours. The word comes from the Latin vesper, meaning "evening."

Yes, it's a magical sound if you can take time to sit back and listen. All is hushed during this time - somehow. There have been a number of musical pieces composed with these acoustics in mind. The tempo is just right and the sounds are given time to "swirl" around and sink in, so to speak. This would not be so if they'd sung elsewhere. Very nice capture of the interior of the Basilica, Cosme. Really does set the mood for us.

A beautiful example on Romanesque art and architecture. What I especially like is that it is so light compared to the dark gotic style that would follow.

Well, I knew it had to be that way. The amazing shape of the structure seemed to have been built with just that one thought in mind... The materials, the shape, the size all pointed to amazing sound. This is a great look at the design of the arches! Fabulous information.
