Description

While hiking up to the waterfall in Russian Gulch I came across the oddest example of nature's tenacity. The image shows a tree on a stump. Not new growth growing out of a stump but a new tree growing on top of an old stump. Somehow it germinated, grew and survived. Ain't nature cool?

It's very cool! Great find and capture! Russian Gulch is a truly amazing place. Tree roots are fascinating. I went back to a school I had gone to as a child. It was hard to recognize the place until saw the pine tree roots that my sister and I had played among. I hope this tree last a goodly long time!

As soon as I saw this image at full size I recalled with strong emotion a scene from a film I had seen nearly twenty years ago. This documentary followed a herd of African elephants over a two year period. Early in the span one of the elder males was doing very poorly. Before long he parted from the heard and made his way to a secluded spot to settle in and die. More than a year passed before the herd made its way to this area again. One of the younger males wandered off with intention to the place where the elder bull had died. Only bones and ivory remained. What followed was a scene that so resonated within that I shall recall it the rest of my days. The young male lifted up a tusk with his trunk and cradled it as one would a cherished baby. In some moments he began to caress the tusk with his snout. The camera was not close enough to discern sound but if it were I am certain there would have been tones of mourning. That humanity, by and large, disregards the emotional potential and depth of other living beings is deeply despairing in what it says about our own emotional poverty. What strikes me, and, as I have just revealed, my eyes are jaded, is the way the roots do seem to caress the old trunk .. even to defend it. But that couldn't be possible!.. could it? If a tree cries in the forest and nobody is there to hear it but Mark .. would he tell us? ;-) Terry
