Description

#4 in my trip pics and the last of the Badlands. I've decided to show how much climbers can affect the crumbling and loose terrain. The rocks in the top photo no longer seem quite as sharp and jagged as they are in the bottom image. The lower photo was taken very close to the end of the tourists loop as just around the next turn we came to grassy plains again. I couldn't resist tossing in the road sign I managed to capture while driving. Thanks so much for visiting! Any comments you wish to leave are always appreciated. Superlative shots in this superlative collage, which must have taken some extra time and effort to create, Jodie! With those sharp and craggy features, the Badlands look badder than I had imagined.

both very fine shots, and the bottom one is quite fine, with the sweep of the hills embracing the back of the shot & harmonizing with the curve in the road (well, the road was built to harmonize with the hills but the shot puts them both in harmony), and the clarity of the hills, strata, etc, and the overall "dakota" flat sunlight and grays of the hills & roads. I think it's a fine shot. And the signs teaches us things: I didn't know it was a 'loop', for example; and I'm very curious about the 'minuteman missile' sign (I'll have to look that up!). And the top shot does show us how those hills wear down from use. I wish they were restricted: Bare hills are so much more susceptible than big forested mountains, and climbers can find tons of other places to climb besides the Badlands. I know there are several Badlands areas in the US & Canada, and I know the Lakota Sioux named it "badlands" in their language, and above all that they're sacred to their people. I think many climbers forget that. I've much enjoyed these shots, and that bottom one would be wonderful quite large. Am looking forward to the next installment...
