Description

In the United States, Smokey the Bear is our symbol for forest fire prevention. A black bear cub, found with burned paws, after a 17,000 acre forest fire, in 1950, on the Capitan Mountains, became “Smokey 1”. He was replaced in 1975 by a new orphaned cub. This plaque, on a large boulder , sits in Capitan, NM. Scanned from a photo taken in the spring of 1996. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments. Dana

We had a lot of Smokeys last year with all of the forest fires we had. We had "Li'l Smokey" and he was released earlier this year, I think in Feb. We will probably have more this year. http://www.ltwc.org/

I belonged to the Smokey Bear Fan Club as a kid and today I have a 10 inch Smokey Bear on my desk at work. I think it is too bad that so many of this generation do not know the story of Smokey Bear and his roll in preventing forest fires.

What an interesting and great plaque Dana, glad there was a smokey bear fan club as mentioned by PJ, allows children to understand about fire prevention

I never knew there was a real Smokey; it tears my heart to think of all the animals that are harmed by wildfires. Thanks for this shot!

So that's the story behind the name and I thought it was invented along with the CB radio! Thank you for another educational history lesson.
