Description
Given all the really neat aircraft photos of late, I also have a contribution to make regarding a very peculiar weapon system which did not debut late in WW2
I believe Volkswagen joined the war effort to design a small VolksFlugzeug interceptor very late in the war. However, something got lost in the specifications. Instead of designing and building a small bug-shaped, easy-to-fly fighter, they designed and built a large fighter-shaped bug: the VW-197R. Commonly this was referred to as Das GrosseUglischeKleineBuggen-R, or as allied intelligence used to refer to it, when referred to at all, The Big Ugly Little Bug-R.
The initial planned use of this totally unfit wonder weapon was to make use of its tremendous 45,000 foot ceiling and to send swarms of them aloft to smash themselves on the windshields of enemy aircraft thus disconcerting the flight crews. The initial date of deployment was referred to as Die Flitterwochedamerung which traslates well into Etruscan and Klingon, but nothing else.
Needless to say, so I will say it, this was a total failure when the DDT-bombing of the production facility cut short the deployment. However, some productions prototypes did escape and I found this one lurking on a hosta in my front yard.
Enjoy; thanks for viewing.
