Lighting test
This is a lighting test to see how light reflects off my model using just one radial light to duplicate sun light. I see quite a few pictures here that shows either hardware (spaceships) or planets with more then one light source. I think that getting this correct is one of the hardest things to accomplish.
Many images posted show the spaceship or planet lit from both sides but this is not very accurate. I realize that most want to show all of the objects detail but it makes the objects look out of place.
I feel leaving the correct ambient light gives the picture more depth and will make (IMHO) a more dynamic presentation.
Thanks again for taking the time to view and comment on my work. If anyone is interested, I have posted 40 new images on my website showing detail pictures of both sections from this image plus a redesign of the fuel tank section.
Cheers,
David

Excellent modeling, well done...
Splendid model my friend ;-) I like the light setting here...Cool Brycing
Very believable lighting...excellent image!
Ooh, I like how you did the lighting for this. I agree that it's much more realistic. It's pretty hard to get that kind of light correct in most 3D programs, it seems like, but this is pretty good. The model looks awesome, too.
Always great to see your images and look at all the details (and know that they has some function!) As for lighting, yeah, space is dark. You're absolutely correct. It gets complicated near a planet, though. In earth orbit, you get "earth glow", so if you look at the space station or a spacewalk on TV, you often don't see much shadow. And there was this Mythbusters episode where they showed how much light reflected off the light lunar surface onto the moonwalkers (busting the Apollo-deniers who said you shouldn't be able to see anything in shadow.) Then there's systems with multiple stars...
Great looking render, and I like the lighting, too. Excellent work!
I quite agree with your ideas about lighting for space pictures; although, I also agree with geirla about "planet- or satellite glow and multiple star systems.
Very good light and scene.
Excellently lit model Dave!
really nice one
EXCELLENT WORK - VERY WELL DONE.
You have a piont there...Great work....!!!
You are technically accurate with the lighting, but what's the point of posting a model, or a picture, with such detail and accuracy if half or more is hidden by darkness and you only see a portion of the scene?
rstar, I am posting the image this way to show how the ship would look like if it were in space. That was whole purpose of this post. If you want to see, more detailed pictures of this model or any of my models please visit my website at http://www.bambam131.com.
Bravo! This is a very beautiful image. Remarkable job. This picture very much has liked to me. Five stars!
very realistic lighting; well done!
Very realistic indeed. Great modelling work!
