Description
Now no more than an old ruin Crackpot Hall was built in the 16th century by the Swaledale land owner Lord Wharton as a luxurious hunting and shooting lodge and for the benefit of his keepers who looked after the red deer that once roamed the surrounding woodlands. The building was occupied until 1952 but the family hastily moved out due to subsidence caused by mining.Although now a peaceful valley in the 18th Century thousands of men worked the lead mines. Just a short walk from the village of Keld, Crackpot Hall is a favoutrite visiting location on the coast to coast walk.
