Her gaze shifts.
Below, ten million sleeping souls inhabit the nighttime city.
Her gaze is mirrored by polarized glass. Reflecting infinities.
The android/woman/mind that is Marylyn raises a hand and her mirror twin facing her raises a hand -- their palms touch, their eyes meet.
She turns from the window.
At the basin she fills the sink with warm water, soap scented vanilla. It cannot remove the scent of him from her skin.
Unlike a human mind, the machine mind can know itself in perfect objectivity. View its own function from within, and without. Know action and outcome at processor speed.
Marylyn is an AI existing not in one location, but rather across a vast network of computer systems spread among the outer planet moons of System States space. The sentient programs that are her mind exist on computer networks connected by a real time tychon FTL communications network.
The Mind that is Marylyn is a product of Deep Blue, the research arm of System States Intelligence, and Covert Operations.
She was designed to act independently -- manipulating the covert intelligence assets of the System States.
What her designers had not counted on was her capacity to feel ...
