Description
Night in Chicago comes subtly—it sneaks in from the east, as if it’s been exhaled from the lake. Today, the hints of a storm blew in, looming over the southern skies like some space-invader pie plate from a Hollywood extravaganza. Rain fell in scant, fitful drops, and the cloud bank moved on.
I’d been walking with my camera, looking for something, though I couldn’t say what. This picture, as you see it, is only a few hours old.
As always, thank you for viewing and commenting, and hopefully everyone is on the verge of a fantastic weekend.

Wonderful evening shot with man made light of incandescent, fluorescent, sodium and other rarefied gases contrasting with the natural sky colours of sunset in the background. A terrific feel of energy especially with the river aways in motion just under foot.
OMG, Chip this is gorgeous and this must be bridge day, cuz they are a LOT of em out there today!! The light and reflections are stunning!!
The shimmering night lights playing their music on the water. The sky not yet willing to give up it's light to the darkness of night. Fantastic shot, Chip.
Gorgeous colors - rich and beautiful. I love it when you walk around aimlessly, looking for things to shoot. There's always something, and you have a knack for finding just the right thing.
Veeeerrrryyyyy nice! You nailed this one! The perfect spot on the bridge! The depth of field is just right! The water, the lighting...I really LOVE the whispy bit of sunset cloud hovering on the horizon. Lovely.
Romantic sight. Why are night lights always thought of as romantic? But this is and the reflections accent that mood.
Fantastic work.
Your pic shows that a city can be very beautiful, even though I find them soul-withering.
i love it.
My favorite time of day/night; the cusp of was and will be. Rich colors and shimmering lights, and a totally wonderful shot!
An absolutely excellent capture in every aspect, mood, lighting, color and composition. Chicago isn't the easiest town to make look good and you have done a magnificent job.
Wonderful work. Colors, lights, textures and a great eye for composition creats a truly beautiful scene. Well done.
Just the last hint of light sneaking off and leaving the mirrors of its soul. Excellent capture.
just right!
Unique. You must be proud of your picture! It has the most beautiful reflections at night into the water...and a fabulous perspective .You show just what you want.Nothing is by chance there. The way you play with the light is awesome-the natural luminosity of the sy still blue and artificial light. Bravo!
Beautiful shot
A very lovely shot. CC
breathtaking mix of the natural and the artificial!
the rippling reflections work great, Chip. a most festive vista and moods!
Your night time cityscapes are well thought out and beautifully lit and I enjoy your eloquent statements on each of your images. Thanks so much for the kind comment you left on my latest effort.
Chicago looks way different at night then in the day, This is beautiful work. I spent my teen years in Kenosha Wisconsin, we took a lot of day trips to Chicago. I have only seen Chicago in the day time.
yes you captured chicago at dusk, at least the downtown area. Night does exhale off the lake, doesn't it (as always, well put Chip), it kind of brushes over the city as if by a painter. And you got the in-between moment when day still whispers and night is pressing it out of existence. The pale light, the luminous dark blues, the shimmer of the street-level lights (which you capture well in other shots too—I'm thinking of your incredible halsted shot which began this group of chicago uploads, I think), and the dark hidden quality of the rest—that's what it's like. A beautiful mysterious shot, filled with the contradictions of the modern American city, the shimmer & coldness, and that old state st. bridge speaking of an older iron age in the city's history which was filled with as much corruption as today's, only more localized; and the river looking deep & mysterious even though it was so polluted for so long & carried the bodies of god-knows how many unwanteds...fine work again. You've done this city a great visual service...
It is a wonderful night capture my friend. You have such a wonderful collection.I apologise for not commenting on all your pictures as you do have so many, but i will comment on all your future uploads my friend.
