Description
This pic is a bit grainy but I am sharing anyway because this bird is so elusive. I have chased this bird for hours, day after day and can never get a clear shot...This is a female, she was at just about head level with me and I could get very close but she was always in shadows or hidden by leaves. She stayed in one spot long enough for a couple shots then off she would go again. I used the black and white for this because she is black and white and it made her show a little better. I am going to keep trying to get a good one of her but now waiting till its warm outside in case I have to chase her again:-) She is about 6" long! Info below found on the web.

The Downy Woodpecker is the most common North American woodpecker, and is also the smallest at approximately 6.5 inches (16 centimeters) in length.
The species breeds over a widespread area encompassing most of North America, except for the extreme Southwest and areas above the treeline. Six recognized races of Downy Woodpecker exist and are separated by -
* size - northern races are larger
* amount of white on body - Alaskan and northwestern Canadian races are very pale overall
* lack of white on wing - northwestern and western races have little white on their wings

The Downy is always acutely aware of anything that moves towards it. You will have more luck moving along a slightly converging path or just staying where you are and waiting for them to come to you. They are very curious. Good luck!
