Once upon a time in Cote D' Ivoire, these buildings were new and they provided hope for a better future.

The way that you state this indicates that this is not so anymore. but then, this is not unusual no matter where in the world you go. Great photo
H'mm. Faemike55 expresses my concerns. Are the buildings now crumbling in neglect? Who paid for these buildings? Was it a case of trying to overlay an alien culture on an infrastructure not ready or able to support the new ways? We'd like more info, Major. As a side note: these last four images show the sky as overcast. Is this weather persistent? You open another view on this part of the world.
At one time, Cote D'Ivoire was one of the most wealthy and advanced former French nation in Africa. The source of this wealth was that at that time, this was one of (if not the) leading producers of cocoa. Odds are, most of the chocolate any living adult human ate chocolate made from Cote D'Ivoire cocoa when they were children as most American and European chocolate producers purchased their cocoa from here. Then civil war came and stayed for a long time. The war was still active at the time of this photo a couple years ago. During that time, the nation's lack of stability and security forced all the major cocoa users to set up operations and purchase their cocoa elsewhere, like South America. Now, Cote D'Ivoire is a hollow shell of its former glory.
