Description
Another wonderful place near my home just up the road in Oxfordshire. I have shown the exterior before this was taken in the Summer, with me hiding behind the pillars with a few coloured flash gells to add to the atmosphere, not sure if I overdid that!!
The Tithe Barn at Great Coxwell was described by William Morris as "the finest piece of architecture in England...unapproachable in its dignity, as beautiful as a cathedral, yet with no ostentation of the builder's art".
This is a stunning example of Gothic architecture, the enormous barn (12m x 40m) was built by the Cistercian Order in the early 1300s. It was used to gather the yearly tithe or rent from the numerous tenants who worked the surrounding land. Every year after the harvest the barn would be stuffed full of sheaves of corn, livestock and wool before the monks carted off the lot to their headquarters at Beaulieu Abbey in the New Forest.

A beautiful play of light and shadow, and a fascinating history. Impressive architecture, considering its impressive age!

A perfect masterpiece. so great! Thank you for sharing it!
great compo and light Danny, the blue behind the pillars looks a tad unnatural to my eyes, if that's to do with the flash I think you may have just overcooked it. home of the owls eh? ;)

Good light and color Nice picture erland
I am not being glib here but I have not heard of such a practice...I thought it was kings and all that who came in and gathered such masses of goods and coin. Basically, then, we are talking of these tenants as being "share croppers" who gave over a percentage of their "crop" to retain the right to farm? In any case, I love this shot. The light is so well done at the far end and then I see nothing but blue on the other side. Wonderful information too.
awesome light here... excellent!
