Description
Through movies such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy New Zealand has marketed itself as an image of Tolkien's "Middle Earth", populated by friendly if slightly backward weed smoking hobbits. Whilst this faraway land is blessed with many things including a fair climate, varigated topography, and tracts of pristine wilderness it is also blessed like many others with it's own culture of brutality and vice in the form of criminal gangs.
Such people are not confined to cities such as "Orc-land" (Auckland) and these creatures are neither as stupid nor as dull as Tolkien's Orcs. Like all humans they have the ability to channel their creativity into making tools to give them an edge over those they parasitize.
Like the victims of crime, people who cross lines of civility and decency are to be pitied in their slavery to the desires that drive them to acquire what does not rightfully belong to them - desires which are no more or less base than those who steal from their fellows using financial instruments as their chosen weapons.
If the sight of these tools of the trade instill a shudder, at least there is something essentially honest about a club of wood with four inch nails driven into one end. The damage that this instrument can deal is probably far less than even the simplest Ponzi.

Great shot but I wonder what drives the interest in collecting and displaying a collection like this. I have seen it all and more over the years but putting it all together tends to make me look away in shame. What have we produced that finds these to be necessary items to make a living? Interesting shot and well done.
Pshaw (now there's a word!) A collection of man's inginuity is just that. None of those items does anything without man driving (or using to be exact) them. By definition they are all tools. It's how they are used that makes the difference. I must admit the only place I have seen such collections is at police stations. Not my cup of tea but interesting any way. Nice shot.

What an intriguing array of tools. I can't say that I like what they're used for, but I can see something of humanity in them: not a pretty thing--not by a long-shot--but something odd and intriguing. Many of these weapons (the non guns) seem to imply a particular interest in close-range fighting. That odd combination of Brass Knuckle and Knife is quite intriguing...it looks like an alien weapon. It's on the bottom, just left of the club with nails sticking out of it. Whatever that thing is, it's something intended for use by someone who loves swinging their fists and wants maximum results for the effort. NOT a pretty thing at all, but intriguing. Almost like something a Klingon would use as a toothpick. Quite a compelling piece of work here.
