Description
Lisbon, Carriages museum. Auntietk commented on shock absorbers, well, they are there, and rather efficient. It's not so obvious in this shot (if you look closely you'll see the terminal part) but it is in one I posted a couple of days ago. The whole passenger box hangs hammock like from four sturdy leather straps. It looks efficient as a shock absorber, but the whole contraption must have swayed madly.

You are right concerning the swaying. I've been in one suspended like this one...tho' not nearly as decked out. Ridden in leaf-sprung ones, like Old West coaches, and non-sprung types. I'll take any suspension over none. Nice photos. Thanks.
incredible!
Asombroso mi amigo....!!!!!
Amazing!
Oh, thank you! I went back and looked at your post from a couple of days ago, and I can see the straps quite clearly. I love knowing how things work. :) I thought there must be some mechanism for making the rich occupants as comfy as possible!
Awesome!
Such an ornate carriage. This detail you have brought out is fascinating. Excellent shot.
