Description
Between the turn off from highway 395 just south of Mono Lake east along highway 120 to Benton it is a distance of about 48 miles. This stretch of highway is at an elevation between 5,000-ft. up to a little over 8,000-ft. and is closed in winter. There was no traffic-two cars going in the other direction for the entire drive. When I stopped to take a picture of these salt flats I shut off the engine.
I realized then that there was absolutely no noise. No wind, no rustling of leaves, no wind swishing in grass, no insects, no birds - not even the sound of a high-flying jet...nothing. So I stood there and enjoyed listening to the Sound of Silence.
Of course there is no cell phone coverage and if one brakes down it could be a long wait.

EXCELLENT!!!
ein wunderbares Panorama Foto, dass die Weite dieses Landes einfängt! Fabelhaft!
Again a fabulous view... excellent Sig!
I love this area, it is a special place to be... I have been there and Mammoth Lakes also..
I've driven roads like this before and also stopped to listen to the silence. Sometimes, and this will probably not communicate the thought very well, it can be so quiet that the silence seems to be loud all in itself. Like this shot.
@PhrankPower i know what you mean!
wonderful pov and great perspective..
Kind of reminds me of route 66 in some areas. Nice perspective. Aloha
Wonderful capture - and aptly named, too (after one of my favorite songs, in fact). Thanks for sharing these with us - it's so cool to get to "visit" the area again! :-)
yes, I can almost feel the silence ! Great shot and nice atmosphere
Love you title, I just can imagine myself in there ;O)
Wonderful capture and scene we dont have roads like that in the uk, excellent well done..
This reminds me of the roads in Namibia - miles and miles of nothing!!! Excellent pano Sig!! :)
Very nice!!!
impressive view, excelent perspective, super capture !
Sounds and looks marvellous! You should carry the means to make fire in case you need help!!
Sig, When I saw the other photo you took of this general area, I wondered if the white in the distance was salt flats. This is a wonderful capture and there is a sense of not desolation, but one of extreme stillness. A place where one could be serene and tranquil in that stillness. This also made me think of that wonderful song by the same name. Lea
fantastic place ...wonderful shot
Definitly a lonely strech of road..... Excellent shot!!!
Silence? Silence is totally unheard of! :-) I love the absence of everything here. It really conveys the sounds of silence.
Fantastic photo!!! :)
Aled says we don't have roads like this in the UK we do actually, in the north of Scotland, some of the roads up there are awesome. The type you don't drive on unless you know your vehicle is in good condition and highly unlikely to break down. As you say Sig, it could well be a long wait. I always carry blankets and water, if I am going any distance, plus the regular things, torch first aid etc. Fantastic capture, superb depth to the image. Bravo!!!!!
My kind of place.
Excellent capture my friend.I like the sound of silence.Thank you for taking me there my friend.
wonderful shot of this place. looks super
Fantastic capture! really love this one :)
I envy your experience, hopefully I shall get to hear that sound one day. Great shot. : )
A fantastic image!
Excellent work, Sig!!!
Great pano; you did a lot of driving on that day, I think! I know places like this, my family used to drive from Los Angeles to Lake Havasu often; there's a stretch in the desert that's 99 miles of two-lane road like this, with nothing around but quiet...
