Description
There's a lot of tension in my hometown Gouda at the moment. And specially my neighborhood called Oosterwei, now three days in the national news. Yesterday this resulted in a man molesting a camera crew and all of the country talks about it while not knowing the nuances of the question. A lot of racist talk is on the forums of the newspapers for it's a hood with a lot of morrocan people in the Netherlands, and a lot of people fear that. But there's nothing to fear. I respect people, so I greet people when passing them on the street, be it with a word or just a little movement with the head, when people get to know you it's mostly with a smile, no matter what country you or your father was born. It's fear that makes people pass each other without even a look these days,and thus no showing of respect. I wish some people would wake up and open their eyes.
The picture was not shot in the neighborhood, but in the centre of town, also going bad in the eyes of some of those forum people. But those people are absolutely wrong, the centre here is beautiful and cosy when you compare it to the other two towns I've lived in, Eindhoven and Rotterdam.

Toch is het een mooie stad Vooral rond die mooie oude kerk en dat waanzinnig fraaie raadhuis Prachtige grachten waar het leven nog goed is.. Wat gedempt is moet weer open.. dan komt het met die hele stad wel weer goed

I love the mood of this shot. The sky is so wonderfully ominous! It looks like a shot from a horror film! An excellent shot for the tensions you describe. And I totally agree with what you wrote. We had much the same thing here after 911. Some people were downright nasty to anyone who looked like they might be middle eastern. I found the same thing you did, a smile goes a long way. It is idiotic for a whole group of people to be maligned because of what a few of that ethnic origin may have done.
