Description
I was driving through the rain forest, north of Laguna de Arenal as it was getting dark. This was the second of these strange animals I saw and decided to stop and take a picture. It is a whitenosed Coati, the most diurnal and frequently seen procyonid. They are brownish in color but longer, slimmer and lighter than raccoons. They are found throughout Costa Rica in all types of forests up to 3,000m elevation.
This picture was taken on 7 December 2004.

I sure am learning a lot of stuff on this site. What a strange animal. Glad you could pull over and get a shot. Nice work. Aloha
What an interesting animal! Good shot. I hope they don't bite.
wow never saw one of these cool shot of him
An amazing creature with ankles that rotate for up and down climbing and a nose that can move 60degrees in any direction. They often hang upside down to eat and eat small meats like lizards, tarantulas and bugs. This is a great shot of this one in the wild. That must have been thrilling!
fantastic capture my friend, excellent image

Never saw one of these -- cool find, and great shot!

...ein schönes Foto von diesem Tier! Und wie immer eine interessante Geschichte dazu....
Fascinating Sig - I have never even heard of them, let alone see one. Thanks for sharing!! :)
Great when you find an animal within its own land and natural habitat. good clear shot, thanks for sharing and information, I took note that Pj had also added some extra useful info also. Well done!
Fantastic shot.
Looks muscular and fitted for digging. I knew a guy like that once from the Pennsylvannia coal country. He became a dentist after playing colledge football. Taught me a useful forearm smash that frightened bodybuilders decades later.
Interesting photo! :)
Opportune capture of a strange creature!
Interesting and so cute shot Sig!
Very interesting crittur! well caught!
A friend of mine that has a Petshop owns one.... Definitly an interesting animal... And one you don't want to turn your back on.. Can be sweet and lovable, quiet and naturally curious... But also if something sets him off... watch out!!!! Excellent shot!!!
