Description
Nikon 7900 pocket camera - hand held image.
This is a male Grey Petaltail Dragonfly. they are one of the exceptions to a basic difference between Dragonflies and Damselflies. Clubtail Dragonflies also are an exception.
I often see images of Damselflies that are identified as Dragonflies. I sometimes comment on this but not always. When I do comment, I usually say that Dragonfly eyes touch each other and Damselfly eyes do not. Dragonflies are generally much larger than Damselflies and they hold their wings differently when perched.
The eyes of Petaltail and Clubtail Dragons do not touch.
The Grey Petaltail is fairly large. As much as 3" long. They prefer to perch on the sides of trees and you can hear them as they fly. Their wings make a rather loud rustling noise.
Apparently I looked gnarly enough and moved slow enough to be mistaken as a tree because this Petaltail landed on my chest, lol. He then was willing to move onto my finger for a shot or two before moving to a real tree. I got a few shot of him there as well.
I see these Dragonflies just a few times each year and this was the most successful photo attempt I ever had.
Thanks to those who take the time to comment.

Cool!
WOW. Which drugs do you use to let them sit on your fingers?!? lol Great image. 5+++
Very lucky indeed. Thanks for the information. I am learning a lot about these on RR. Terrific shot. So, what drug did you use???? Just kidding. Well done. Aloha
...die perfekte Tarnung! Wo findest Du nur diese vielen Libellen!?!?! Ich bin begeistert von Deinen Fotos - wo sonst bekommt man so tolle Tiere zu sehen!!!
nice sharp images ans it's nice to find a co operative dragonfly for a change
I'm beginning to think you spray them with something, Lee, lol! Marvellous shot that show all the details.
That is a big ol dragon. Excellent !
Love the way it's laid out along your finger Lee, thanks for the info about the eyes, I always go off the wings when they are perched. As you say the Dragonfly rests with wings open, the Damselfly with wings closed up like a butterfly. Superb images here, the second one against the tree he really blends in with the rough bark. Excellent work. Bravo!!!!!
oh these are Great! amazing shots! i too love that clicking sound they make
HE IS BEAUTIFUL GLAD YOU GOT THE SHOT ON YOUR FINGER CAUSE HE REALLY BLENDS INTO THE TREE
Splendid capture! You must taste good or they just know you are a friend. Amazing shot. Bunny
Fabulous. I always enjoy your information too. Last season I was brave enough (LOL) and lucky enough to have a dragon on my finger, it was really cool.
Hope, you did not cheat us with glue... very fine capture though.
