Description
I was browsing through some pics I took in London in April, and came upon several that I have not yet shared with you.
The Golden Hinde is a full-size authentic reconstruction of the galleon in which Sir Francis Drake sailed to become the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe in 1577-1580.
It is berthed in St Mary Overie Dock beside the river, on the Southbank, (my favourite place in London!) and is open to the public.
The Golden Hinde was a Tudor warship, and this replica has travelled over 140,000 miles. She is now permanently berthed on London's South Bank and is visited by 1,000s of visitors each year, of equal appeal to those interested in Tudor life at sea, Francis Drake, or pirates! It is possible to book a private party, see a tour (available 5 days a week throughout the summer) or attend one of the special events.
Skilled interpreters, dressed in Tudor costume, show your party around the ship, and I was as enthralled as the party of schoolchildren on board as I stood beside the dock and listened in. The children learned about life at sea for both officers and ordinary sailors, heard tales of Drake's voyage around the world, and learned about weapons and warfare in the 16th century. It was fascinating!
Pirate party, anyone?
