Description
These signs near Punaluu Black Sand Beach Park were closing off highway 11. After Kilauea began to erupt in 1983 lava flow from the eruptions crossed the highway at this point and it became impossible to completely drive around the Island of Hawaii. Behind the signs one can see solidified lave, a destroyed car, burned and partially buried in this lave.
While we were walking over this solid lava the soles of our shoes were getting warm. There was lava flowing below the surface and occasionally we could see steam erupting about one half mile away to the right when some lava reached the coast and dropped into the ocean.
This picture was taken in May 1987 and later scanned.

I would love to see such a thing but would be hesitant with the dangers lurking
...und wieder eine sehr interessante Geschichte zu einem Foto! Gute Arbeit!
A natural event that engineering has yet to approach for control. When your infrastructure melts like wax it gets tough.
almost tempting to go past that sign, excellent shot Sig.
We did Rich. That's why the soles of our shoes got warm. Walking past these signs was OK, you just couldn't drive past!
Sure i would not go there Sig..great shot! :)
Great shot!!!!!!!!
Very interesting informations and great shot. I can easily imagine the damages caused by hot lava.
Great shot, you are brave especially knowing what was flowing under your feet!! xx
Excellent shot, fantastic details and beautiful light
Your image is perfect. 5+.
Mother Nature rules~~~and Pele has the last word~~you and Sharky, always going past the signs to see what lies beyond!!
I wish I was into photography at the time you were down there but at the time, I had a fishing pole and a cooler to go along with it. The beach destroyed was one of Hawaii's most famous beaches. It is now only harden lava and not a trace that a beach was there. Only in the year 2004 I got interested in a camera because of punaguy and walked this area many times. To bad I missed you when you were down here....... Nice shot .. Aloha
Exciting photography Sig, it reminds me of when I used to work on a farm, the manure pile used to bake a hard crust on top and if you were light and fast you could run across it quite easy. One of the new lads saw us doing it and gave it a try. I would hate to go through lava crust the same way as he did the manure crust, the end result in both would be pretty shitty. We had to hose him down. Roflmao just remembering it. I think I would have been drawn to explore just as you did Sig, signs are usually erected to be ignored. Superb work. Bravo!!!!!
Impressive and interesting... a great shot Sig!
Fascinating capture Sig, always tempting to go beyond forbidden boudaries! excellent!
Hope to see a lava flow in person some day!
