Getaria - Basque Country - Spain
In every basque town there is a playing site like this one, called "fronton" where adults and boys play often basque pelota. The curiosity of this one is that its front wall uses one wall of the monument to Juan Sebastian Elcano, native of this town. This fellow first enroled as an explorer and two years later was the commander of the first expedition around the world. It lasted four years. As a fan of Art-Deco like a lot the statue of the angel, the only figure in the monolitic monument. And it has only one inscription, in latin: PRIMUS CIRCUMDEDISTI ME. FUISTE EL PRIMERO QUE ME DIO LA VUELTA . YOU WERE THE FIRST ONE TURNING AROUND ME.

En la primera foto la maravillosa escultura de la mujer alada, victoria frente a los elementos, recortada en el impresionante cielo resulta tremendamente espectacular y hermosa. Un verdadero poema visual. La segunda foto mezcla del arte, la naturaleza y la pelota basca es de lo más curiosa !!

Estube aquí en 1991, y no ofrecía este aspecto , al menos tan arreglado, el frontón. Creo que allí cerca, en la pequeña plazoleta existe una estatua a Elcano, si mal no recuerdo. Pero la figura de este hombre fué bastante ignorada por 'acreditados' historiadores, especialamente franceses e ingleses. Boorstin, si no he escrito bien su nombre, en su libro 'Los descubridores', lo menciona casi 'de paso'. Para mí fué un historia épica, inigualable, sin parangón para los tiempos actuales. Magnífica rememoración, Churruca!!
