Description
The Kestrel is a small, chestnut brown bird of prey that is frequently seen hovering over grassland. The hooked bill is a bluish colour with yellow cere. The legs are yellow.
The male (or tercel) Kestrel has black-spotted chestnut brown upperparts, and a blue-grey head and tail. The tail has a single black bar at the tip. Underneath, the breast and belly are buff coloured with black spots.
The female (or falcon) as captured here is darker than the male and the back, mantle and wings all have black barring. The tail has black barring along its length. The creamy underparts are more heavily streaked in black than the male. Occasionally, the head and tail may be tinged with grey.
Juveniles are like females.

Excellent capture, beautiful detail and clarity, stunning work!!!
Surely a stock little bird. Powerful for its size I bet. This is a great shot. Catches the expression and the packed body very well.
love the series.. another great shot!
Beautiful bird and superb work.
Wonderful photo my friend....!!! Fantastic detail....!!!!
After my ex-wifes Chevette got repossessed she bought a front drive Tercel. The ealier BMW repossesion did not count since that had occured in my side yard and they paid me a $1. She was right about responsibility. It really does conflict with peace of mind. My condo time share wnet to back taxes, though I never heard since I forgot to leave a forwarding address with Dade County. It did seem strange only receiving a bill for the first year.
Very interesting to find out that only the female is called a falcon! A most beautiful picture.
A stunning shot of one of my favorite birds, Danny! I had to get my bird book out and do some looking, as this surprised me, had never seen a female up close before. Do British Kestrels look just the same as our American variety? Wonderful creamy DOF, and at f7, wow!
Oh how cute is this one!...thanks a lot Danny for this wonderful shot!
