The following is part of a short scene that I had written for a short story writing class that I took a while back. The kitchen was described as pretty much as how you see it here...
The teapot whistled and she turned off the stove.
She poured herself a mug of tea and sat down to enjoy the quiet of kitchen.
"Got to get ready.", she muttered to herself as she set the mug down on the table. "He's coming to take me on the date he promised me before he left for oversea."
She look at the face of the kit cat clock hanging over the stove, its tail swinging in rhythm to her heartbeat, and its eyes moving in opposition to her belief.
The second hand moving slowly around the numbers as if suspended in time, a time when she was 25 and living at her parent's mansion in New Hyde Park. She had just been introduced to the social world as a debutante and met Paul.
Yes, Paul. At the thought of his name, she took another sip and set the mug down once more on the old wooden table, got up and walked out of the kitchen into the chaos that was her living room. "Got to get ready for Paul"...
