Description
My apologies to Mike (Meico) and Mina (Nekhbetsun) for this picture. I know you two are probably about to jump out of your skin! Take a deep breath, and move on to the next picture. I'll understand, I promise!
For the rest of you ...
This is the Crooked River Gorge. When you pull off the highway here, there are signs in front of every other parking space that say something like:
Caution! 300-foot cliff ahead. No pets allowed. Supervise your children.
I've seen far better photographs than this on the web that were taken from this general area, but I wasn't willing to climb out over the wall and stand on the edge of the cliff, or get up on the bridge, in order to get a better pov. (Middle aged, flip-flops, straw hat, camera - remember?)
The railway bridge was completed in 1911. Awesome historical postcard shots here! In order to build the bridge, the workmen had to climb down a rope ladder, cross the river, and climb back up another rope ladder. Talk about a tough job!
It's 320 feet from the river to the ridge, and the bridge is 460 feet long. (That's from end to end - the canyon is about 340 feet across.)
B&W is in honor of the age of the bridge. The canyon, of course, is quite a bit older.

This is a great photo, Tara, and even in black and white, it looks HOT! I share your sentiments re clambering around, flips-flops and straw hat!
Stunning capture Tara... And yes - I agree... no clambering around to get the perfect shot. Let's leave that to the pro's!!! :)
Excellent capture Tara, works fantatically in black and white, excellent work my friend.

The Infamous Crooked River Bridge think back 30 or so years, Excellent capture and I would not go any closer either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wonderful shot Tara, I too think you were quite close enough, the pov is perfectly fine! Thank you for the info, too! :)
outstanding work.. the black and white realy works well here.
Wonderful shot! The right moment for one of the old steam locomotives, I love this!!! This was a good idea to do it in B/W.
....very nice shot Tara...but after seeing those old postcards ...I have to ask why you and Jill did not wait for a train to cross the bridge ??.......could you not have brought some boloney sandwiches to tide you over while you waited ?...hmmmmm ?
Stark light and dark in this splendid Ansel Adams type b&w photograph, Tara. Kinda reminds me of objects I used to build with my erector set when I was just a mere stripling. In honor of the Crooked River, I hope that isn't a crooked bridge. Of course, since it's apparently still in good shape after all these years, it must be of good solid construction. Although middle aged, next time go with cleated steel-tipped boots, hard hat, climber's pick, hundreds of feet of coiled rope, and your trusty camera.
Awww, what, no hanging out over the chasm on a rope, camera in hand? Chicken!!! Well, it's a great shot nonetheless... ;p
LOL at Ms Ratbag~~but nope, let someone else do that kind of stuff!! No matter, it's a beautiful foto!!
Looks a huge drop even from here. Well caught.
Oh this is awesome, very nice pov and post work :)
You've made it look like an old photo!!!!!! cool!!!
It stands up to the b/w conversion very well. The view is exceptional.
Excellent POV!!!!!! Better safe than sorry, especially with the crumbling rocky terrain!!!!
nice post work...
Wow An excellent shot and info to go with it :D I don't think I'd be too happy going too near the edge either!
