Description
On the left, the north fork of the Merced River, just before in runs into the main part of the river. A meandering, lovely place with pools of warm water. On the right, well, yeah, Class 6, freezing, almost unrunnable, though of course, Jordan (my son) looks at it and says, "You know, if EVERYTHING went right, you COULD do it"!! But even he had to admit that if everything didn't go right, well, guess you can figure out it might not be so pretty.
He and I hiked about 3 miles upriver to this spot, just so he could show me more of this beautiful river canyon. We walked past old gold mining plumes, dams, mines, saw things you just don't get to see otherwise.
Water~~pretty powerful stuff that we just take for granted. Oh, and the sound ~~~ we could barely hear each other over the roar, and it echoes off the granite walls that line one side of the river.
ZOOM in for a great look, you can almost hear the roar!!

Makes one wonder just how a small brook and pool can turn into a savage, raging river at every turn...gathering more and more momentum.
Excellent images, well done...
like the comparisons .sounds as though your having a great time marilyn :o) mick
well shown
Superb and graphic shots!
Oh Marilyn - thank you for sharing your wonderful experience with us. Please keep Jordan away from the class 6's... :) Stunning images my friend!! Hugs, Carin xx
Well seen and captured!
I'm so pleased you took us along for the trip ... unmissable I'd say. You've caught two of the many moods of water quite beautifully here. Mike
great comparison, and excellent capture !
I might do a class 5 if I had an experienced guide and other experienced people in the raft. But I'd prefer to stay with class 4. :-) We have one spot near here that I've done 4 times - a tame class 3 but I did go into it backwards in a scanoe and had to leave myself to the water's mercy - that was my first time through it. :-) I had to do it 3 times more to prove to it and me that I was smart enough to do it right. Great comparison shots.
Nice contrast in these shots of the Merced River, with those ominous looking rocks, Marilyn. Now that is a real transition, from calm and serene, all the way to rip roaring. And what is this "class" business? Do they rate river flow like they do hurricanes and earthquakes? Just too much for my backwoods mind. And, agreed, water is ultra powerful stuff.
this is lovely as the water moves fast
WOW... what a differnce in adrenaline!! Great captures!!! :)
I can see why you are so in tune for this..... Most Beautiful. Aloha

WOW. Impressive. Your written descriptions are as fantastic as the images themselves. Fantastic work and a superb sense of motion. Great presentation! Yeah, and pretty too!
Great contrast in states of water. You are right, water is a powerful thing. I can only imagine some of the sites you saw hiking along the river... :)
