Description
This is the 5th member of Africa's famous Big 5 - the Cape Buffalo. I have had conversations with many game rangers all over SA and they anonimously regard the Cape Buffalo as the most dangerous of the Big 5. The reason being that he is so extremely unpredictable. Apparently it is fairly easy for them to 'read' the other four in terms of behaviour, but not with this guy. (the other four are Rhino, Lion, Leopard and Elephant.)
I took this shot in the Kruger National Park in South Africa. What made this guy even more dangerous is the fact that he was a lone bull - on his own quite a distance from the herd. I must admit that I felt very uneasy when I took this image. He didn't charge, but his body language told me to make myself scarce shortly after I took this shot.
The image was scanned from color negative.
Thank you for popping in and for any comments you might wish to make.

He has an awesome face! Really great capture :)
I agree -- what a great expression on that magnificent animal! Glad he allowed you to leave without incident... I guess this is a prime example of shoot-and-run. ;o) Excellent photo and presentation.
excellent capture my friend, you are much more braver then myself in such a situation, great work !!
Boy you'd better give this big old chap a wide berth, when he charges :)....Wonderful capture, stuck in a dump like London, it's a real eye opener to see these images!
Wonderful 'take-me-there' photography as always, with a really informative commentary. Thank you so much, Carin Hugs Mike xx
He looks so powerful , I was feeling uneasy myself just reading the commentry! Very brave Carin but what a fantastic capture, well done!
seen those in East Africa. Number Two by power after elephant.great capture of great power!
wowwwwwwwwwww..... excellent capure
He is magnificent and your capture of him is too! Look at the character you got in his face...the wide stance...the sizing up of you in his eyes. You really put yourself out there for this shot and it was so worth it! Excellent.
Wow. Thanks for all the info, on the Steenbokkie too! Hmm, now dreaming of the Kruger Park myself. Most of the wildlife around here are in cages. Things to do! Cheers, Clive
Most excellent shot ! Bravo !
Superb image my friend, excellent work !!
I would not want to tangle with that... great shot, though!
I would want a camera with extreme zoom and not get anywhere near that close, Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Respect, this is really impressive!!
Looks like my Boss, amazing !
a brave shot of Mr Stroppy Face ! i agree about the unpredictablility. someone told me that the Masai say the same thing, and if they can't read these blighters then the rest of us need to be very careful. (but i don't think the frame works, it seems distracting ?)
he looks a mean beggar does`nt he .i dont think even i would of been this brave for a shot .excellent capture carin mick
He looks like one mean beasty, the sheer power of the thing, those enormous sholders, and like you say so unpredictable. I would most certainly not want to get on the wrong side of this chappy. Someone has already mentioned the frame Carin, I wouldn't say it was distracting, but maybe a tad narrower would be better. Excellent capture, you are one brave lady. Bravo!!!!!
same for the American bison, very unpredictable. a brave and superb capture
A beautiful capture Carin. I assume you used your 400mm lens and that you had an escape plan!
Thank you for the comments on the frame all. I'll look into it. Sig, I actually took this with +- 100mm and the vehicle was idling - that was the escape plan!!! :)
WOW.Wonderful shot.
Excellent capture Carin.I dont know if you know of the video on You Tube where the herd of buffalos wich attacked the lions to get there calf back.It was one of the video clips most watched on You Tube.

You captured the fierce looks very well, indeed the most cantankerous of the big 5.
