Description
Red pandas have a bear-like body with thick russet fur. The belly and limbs are black and there are white markings on the side of the head and above the small eyes. They have what looks like black tear markings from each eye.. The thick bushy tails with light-brown rings, pointed ears and a pointed snout, has cast some doubt by some scientists if they may be more related to racoons but the evidence is far from clear.
Red Pandas are endangered with only a few thousand in the wild, and I featured one I took 18 months ago in my Fragile Earth series and a member here at the time pointed me to the book by David Quammen that examines the intricacies of evolution as illustrated by the study of islands. These isolated and unique environments provide us with a microscopic view of what happens to species as theY evolve together over time. Hence the part of the title given.. Recommended reading..

Beautiful! Have never seen a red panda! Great capture!
Surely has a raccoon type face. What a weird creature, beautifully captured.
I saw a docu on these some time back, beautiful little critters, the face reminds me of a ferret, bigger I know but I still see a resemblence. I'm on tenter hooks waiting for my trip to the Zoo late next month, I'm like a big kid on his first trip to the seaside.. Excellent capture of this little beauty Danny, I just hope we can pull them back from the brink of extinction. Superb. Bravo!!!!!

Oh such tender glance... a gorgeous shot Danny!
Very nice and cute capture ! I like the sharpness of the details ! Bravo !
We have a pair here at our zoo. They have a habitat that is very realistic for them but it makes it very difficult for visitors to see them. I have caught a glimps of them twice and my first thought was that they look like russet raccoons. This is an exceptional shot. So clear and detailed. Good info too.
Excellent capture Daniel.
