Description
Mevagissey is an attractive old town, and is the very essence of a peaceful haven along with its even smaller neighbour of Gorran.
This medieval town with the pier that was built by John Trewollis in the 1430's was once the centre of Cornwall's pilchard fishery and which still boasts a working harbour, with a few dozen small fishing boats. The Cornish flag of St Piran flies proudly on the central boat.
It has a tradition of boat building dating back to 1745. Many of the old buildings, constructed of cob and slate, bear testimony to a time when the large shoals of pilchards were the livelihood of the whole village that it once was.. The name is derived from two Irish saints St Meva and St Issey from the 8th centuary who were early missionary's

Not only is your photo wonderful but you really completed this image for me with your in depth history of the area.
Lovely!
One has to sort of settle into an era to avoid being tossed on the shoals of modernity. I would chose 1290.
Wonderful and very beautiful photo my friend......!!!!!
So different from any port town I have ever seen on this side of the pond, this image really portrays this town's personality. Such a contrast between the quiet and charming town on the hill and the hustle and bustle of the harbor during busy times. A lovely view and a lovely image!
I love little harbours like this, there is so much character and so much to see. I could look at this photo for ages and see different things to delight my eyes. Wonderfully composed capture Danny. Hugs Chrissy xx
